‘Freedom’ Is A Big Word, 2003

Winner of the Observer Hodge Photographic Award, 2003

“It was hard to single out the winner, but in the end we felt the emotional complexity, paired with an intriguing formal detachedness, gave Ania Dabrowska’s story from South Africa the edge.  The pictures don’t hit you over the head with a clear-cut message, yet they have a strange intensity.  The series conveys a sense of suspense, a society torn between healing and conflict, waiting for what happens next.”
